I used set lighting in this piece to create coloured shadows, which became a key part of the composition. This also created a rich glow in the Cardoons and made a wonderful compliment to the cooler colours in the background. I wanted to create a sense of movement - as if the light may change or the flower heads move at any moment, so use of line is very apparent in this piece.

I was thinking about of the end of life and parallels between the lives of humans and the life of these plants, especially in respect to what we consider as being traditionally beautiful. I wanted to give these amazing plants a final blaze of colour. I struggled in painting this and agonised a great deal over the balance of colour and tone, which has been built up in painstaking layers.
