Painted in a blaze of Autumn sunshine, this piece captures the thousand yellows, pinks and whites which sparkle on the water during the change in the seasons. Through this a goose swims serenely, occasionally stirring up mud, algae and fallen leaves, which float alongside it. Rendered with thick oils and dry drawing marks, this piece seeks to balance the abstract and the figurative.

I used set lighting in this piece to create coloured shadows, which became a key part of the composition. This also created a rich glow in the Cardoons and made a wonderful compliment to the cooler colours in the background. I wanted to create a sense of movement - as if the light may change or the flower heads move at any moment, so use of line is very apparent in this piece.

I was thinking about of the end of life and parallels between the lives of humans and the life of these plants, especially in respect to what we consider as being traditionally beautiful. I wanted to give these amazing plants a final blaze of colour. I struggled in painting this and agonised a great deal over the balance of colour and tone, which has been built up in painstaking layers.

The division of landscape

In the Summer I took glider flight from Sutton Bank North Yorkshire to see the landscape from a completely different perspective. What transpired was a series of works based on that inspirational and (excuse the pun) uplifting and exhilarating experience as a continuous series of paintings titled 'The division of landscape.’ - This is one of them, created with soft and hard pastels combined with liquid and aerosol fixative in multiple layers. Our landscape is forever changing both in layers of history as we create ‘the new’ and build over and morph around ancient settlements, ancient monuments, burial grounds, and more. The landscape and use of it is continually in flux, divided, redivided and reshaped. The continual redivisions, layering of media, reworking finding boundaries and loosing them in this contemporary piece reflects the response to what is seen, felt and expressed in this composition.

Breaking Point was composed utilising elements from a series of photos taken on repeat exposure, during a a summer storm at Rye Harbour, East Sussex. The sky was painted from my memory and learnt observation. Painted on Fabriano Artistico NOT paper, using both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques. Painted in tones of grey with parts of the paper left white or masked for the surf, while some highlights were painted with opaque white watercolour. Framed in a contemporary Grey/Blue frame with thick and thin double white mounts.

This drawing is part of a series about old and discarded clothes that my adult children have left behind which I often draw to feel closer to them after months of not being able to meet. This cardigan, left in the wardrobe for years, was taken out because its colours were “calling” me, and I decided to hang it in the fresh air to look at it anew. Instead of a symbol of longing this drawing has become a sign of hope and new things to come, of new outings, meetings and joy. I used coloured pencils to experiment with line, marks and the layering of colour to achieve unexpected effects and for the sheer riotous joy of pigments.

After a good few adjustments I managed to get the light I was looking for, for this piece, a single light source just above the clearest visible eye, I liked the drama this gave, I wanted a direct caught in the moment look to it, I am am inspired by Rembrandt and Classic films, so I endeavoured to do a Classical portrait pose and bring it contemporary feel, I aimed to give a soft focus effect on the sides of the face to give an added sense of depth. I hoped to give this work a sense of mystery and hopefully to draw some questions as to what his story is from the viewer.
